Plants Are Friends! Teil 4: Christoph Kümmecke

Für den vierten Teil unserer Serie „Plants Are Friends“ waren wir bei Senior PR Consultant und Designliebhaber Christoph Kümmecke in Wedding zu Besuch...

For the fourth part of our series "Plants Are Friends" we visited Senior PR Consultant and design lover Christoph Kümmecke in Wedding...

Christoph Kümmecke is living in Wedding, a district with rough edges and corners. But at the same time there are beautiful parks, interesting restaurants and bars and a lively subculture. He is a big fan of his district, almost a kind of ambassador for what is sometimes wrongly called the problem district of Wedding. If you talk to him about his neighborhood, he goes into raptures. One thing is clear: he never wants to leave his beautiful apartment in the English Quarter, right next to Schillerpark.

Working as a Senior PR Consultant in the field of interior design at Impulse by Communication, Christoph collaborates daily with up-and-coming and established brands such as Woud, Montana, Million, Mater Design and Urbanara. On his Instagram Account @i_love_you_wedding he expresses his love for interior design and invites us into his world. He certainly knows how to put things in the right setting. Minimalistic, but at the same time warm and cosy, he arranges beautiful, puristic furniture with found objects from flea markets, ceramic objects and individual design pieces as eye-catchers.

Christoph was one of the first people we met 11 years ago when we arrived in Berlin. A lot has happened since then. But Christoph is still the same fun-loving, funny and open-minded guy we got to know back then in the Weinerei. We love Christoph not only for his strong sense of design and composition, but also for the best toast with butter and salt we ever had. Thanks again, Christoph!

Christoph invited us into his apartment and answered a few botanical questions.

Erzähle uns bitte kurz, wer du bist und was du machst.

Please tell us briefly who you are and what you do.

My name is Christoph, I am a Senior PR Consultant in Interior Design and have been living in Berlin for 11 years. I settled down in Wedding about 6 years ago and live in an old 3 room apartment right next to Schillerpark. Despite my love of big cities, nature is a very important element in my life, so I really appreciate the surroundings of my apartment allowing me to look out into the fresh greenery from every room. Besides nature, my passion for interior design, my job and of course my friends and family are important to me.

How many plants do you have at home? And can you remember your very first plant? What kind of plant was it, and where did you get it from?

(a.d.R. : ein Klassiker! Willkommen in den 90ern)

Honestly, I have to say at this point that I do not have a green thumb at all. That's why the plants at my home have been carefully curated to be fairly good and easy to maintain. In addition to my planted balcony (mainly Funkien), which is in the shade most of the time, there are eleven plants in my apartment in various rooms. My very first plant was given to me as a child, it was a bubblehead (Soleirolia soleirolii). (a.d.R. : A classic! Welcome to the 90s.)

Did you already grow up with many plants, and/or when and how did your love for plants develop?

My love for plants went hand in hand with the emergence of a passion for interior design. Plants are a part of every interior design concept. They are therefore a complementary decorative object and bring a bit of nature, peace and serenity into your own four walls.

During your work you are primarily working with modern/contemporary interior design, how important are house plants in this industry at the moment?

As already mentioned, plants are part of the interior design and complete the furnishings of your own home. Even in many of the press pictures I work with every day, plants are omnipresent in every form and make the effect of the picture appear more " moody".

Has this changed/strengthened over the last few years? And in which way?

Plant trends, if I can speak of trends at all, have been strongly influenced by various social media channels in recent years. We have gained more insights into the private living spaces of a wide variety of people from different countries. For example, the "Urban Jungle Movement", which was accompanied by a huge flood of plant images, and the dusty, plain Monstera, for example, was once again on everyone's lips.

Siehst du einen Trend hin zur Zimmerpflanze? Wie wirkt sich dieser Trend aus?

Do you see a trend towards the houseplant? What effect does this trend have?

Plain plants are being reinterpreted or staged like objects. Of course, this requires the right vessel, be it vintage, granny's heirloom, the corresponding design object or from the ceramics supplier of one' s choice.

Do you have a favorite plant and/or is there a plant on your wish list?

Although it's more of a "little tree", I could very well imagine a bonsai in the appropriate artistic plant pot in my living room.

Your apartment is very minimalistic, but furnished with great attention to detail. What I also noticed are the many different unique ceramic pieces, be it a vase, bowl, lamp, or the pots you use for your plants. How did this love for ceramics begin? Where do you find these objects? What criteria do you use to select them, and how important is the combination of plant and accessory as a total work of art?

The love for ceramics is based on the great interest in craftsmanship and nature. I find them in various online stores, but some of them I also find at flea markets all over the world. This not only creates a beautiful collection of different but at the same time harmonious objects, but the good pieces can even tell stories.

Welche Accounts inspirieren dich? Sind auch Pfanzen-Accounts dabei?

You are very active on Instagram with your account @i_love_you_wedding, have your own visual language. Which accounts inspire you? Are there also plant accounts?

For example the account of my very close friend (who lives in Wedding, too!) Jules vom Herz&Blut, or the Encense Magazine, Stéphane Parmentier, Nella Beljan or the Shop Counter Space in Los Angeles. In the accounts you will surely find one or the other plant.

At the moment you have very few plants. What will the future look like? Would you like to have more plants in your apartment? Is there a kind of concept?

The concept is very simple: first the furniture, then the plant. Since I maintain a very reduced and minimalist style of living, this has a corresponding effect on the number and selection of plants. That's why I'm currently more than satisfied with my green roommates.

Warum?

As I know, you often redecorate your apartment, swap things around. Why?

When I redecorate, it's mostly just nuances that are usually not really visible to outsiders. Because of the different seasons and the light conditions that come with them, my interior also looks different. A rearrangement of small design objects is only the logical consequence in order to make minimal changes to the atmosphere of your home. In rare cases it happens that I sell design classics and buy new ones, but to be honest this is getting less and less, as I am very satisfied with the current state of my home.

Is there a plant that you don't like at all, and why?

What I could completely do without when cultivating plants is Sansevieria. But hand on heart, at my first apartment I found this plant to be ultimately decorative.

Where do you buy your plants and what criteria do you use to select them?

At the weekly market and at the florists I trust. And of course from you.

Welches Pflanzenaccessoire würdest du dir wünschen/würdest du erfinden?

Which plant accessory would you wish for/would you invent?

Es gibt leider zu wenig ästhetisch-anspruchsvolle Gießkannen.

Unfortunately there are too few aesthetically sophisticated watering cans.

Kaktus oder Grünpflanze?

Cactus or green plant?

Mehr Grünpflanzen, wenige Kakteen.

More green plants, few cacti.

Wegwerfen oder aufpäppeln?

Throw them away or nurture them?

Aufpäppeln (Danke für Deine Rettungstipps)

Statement Pflanze oder Mauerblümchen?

Statement plant or wallflower?

Aus dem Mauerblümchen eine Statementblume/-pflanze machen.

Turn the wallflower into a statement flower/plant.

Große oder kleine Pflanzen?

Large or small plants?

Aus klein groß werden lassen.

Turn small into big.

Pflegeleicht oder anspruchsvoll?

Easy care or demanding?

Pflegeleicht, ich wurde ohne grünen Daumen geboren.
